An Interview with Mariam Alsayed of Heaven Citizen

Name: Mariam aka Mare
Work Title: Wonder Women
Hometown City: Vancouver, BC
Work Life:

This question could be answered in so many ways because no one day is the same. A typical day in the life of Mare starts at 5:30 am on weekdays, and 6:30 am on weekends. To provide some context, aside from photography, blogging, and school life, I also work full time in a supervisory role as an Early Childhood Educator.

When I refer to workdays, I am referring to my days with the children. I start my mornings with a hot cup of coffee and a light breakfast. On my work days, I check emails, get dressed, grab my bag in which I pack the night before and I’m out the door. After work, you can either find me at a local coffee shop working on photo edits, blogging, etc. or class on other nights.

In the evenings, my boyfriend and I take turns in the kitchen. After dinner, I get a little bit more work in IF necessary, we workout, and then it’s time to chill. I typically leave photoshoots scheduled for Saturdays. I love waking up early and taking my time to enjoy all the little things that nourish my soul such as reading, listening to music, reflecting, organizing my schedule, and tidying up my home (I feel super scattered when my home is messy).

Once I feel that I have set my intention for the day, I’m ready for shooting. I prefer working with other creative individuals, but some days I work alone for businesses creating product photography. I like to have this all accomplished before noon, or early in the afternoon, if I don't have work scheduled back to back, this leaves me the rest of the day to be more spontaneous. Sundays are strictly dedicated to my family and inner circle. It’s my day to re-energize and fuel up for the upcoming week.

Q. What is your morning go-to drink?
A. My morning go to drink on most days is black pour over coffee and when I’m more intentional about my health it’s hot water with lemon and honey.

Q. If you were on a jet plane right now, where would you be headed?
A. Oh man! Right now being winter here in Vancouver while I’m under the weather I would love to be on a jet plane to the Maldives or exploring Bali. Any other time, I would say my next big trip has to be Japan! I've been wanting to go for a while now.

Q. Tell us one thing that not everyone may know about you.
A. I was a huge tomboy growing up. I even wore my brother’s pants in elementary school and not to mention, I had the worst eyebrows and wore a bandana religiously to cover them up. I looked like a little thug and was always getting in scraps. Most people who know me now see me as a petite sweet girl. I like to think, I’m a good woman and sometimes a badass chic.

Q. If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be?
A: I would have dinner with my future self. I have anxiety about the direction I choose to go in life and I’m crazy goal oriented with control issues (lol) so I would want to dine with future me and ask her, are you happy?

Q. What are you inspired by?
A. Passionate people inspire me. I don’t care what you’re crazy about I just feed off that energy and it sparks life and creativity within me.

Q. What are your three favourite things about freelance photography?
A: For one, working with creative individuals who have no fear of being them self, as well as having fun playing into a character.

Two, I love directing and helping individuals find confidence in being in front of the camera by providing tips and positive feedback. I find that there are two types of people: the models, and the average people who didn’t know they can model. Times have changed and anyone who can take direction well and display confidence can model.

Three, going out pretending to be a tourist in my city or being an actual tourist in another country and taking candid shots of people like a spy is fantastic for capturing real life.

Q. You’re pursuing your education in counseling psychology while freelancing and blogging at the same time. How do you balance it all?
A. Haha, on the real I have a few meltdowns once in a while with the things I load on myself. But practically speaking, balance is an ongoing practice and the most important thing in creating and maintaining that balance is being self-aware and recognizing your needs and meeting them so you can be at your best and full capacity to tackle life.

Q. What kind of tips and/or advice can you offer to someone wanting to explore photography?
A. Just do it. Go do it! You won’t regret it. Start with your phone camera they are so advanced nowadays. Explore everything and figure out what gives you joy and pour into it slowly and you will be surprised by the skills you can build up quickly when you’re enjoying yourself. There are vast resources out there waiting for you to tap into.

Q. If you could offer one piece of advice to high school Mariam, what would you say?
A. Oh, man. Only one thing?! I would say, learn to not get offended and your judgment will not be clouded.

Q. What is your all time favourite quote?
A. I can't claim one favorite quote because I have many which I live by, but the quote that cycles back now and then is this, To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; ..”

This quote continues, but the point is this; life happens in seasons, and spring always comes after winter, as summer comes after spring, etc. You can gain a lot of wisdom, and grow tremendously if you pay attention to the season you are in and press forward. (I’m going to segway another quote in here by Winston Churchill because I love quotes and he was a brilliant man!) “If you are going through hell, keep going,” and when you find yourself in a good place, give thanks, don’t take the good for granted (aka attitude of gratitude! Just going to sneak in quotes wherever I can).
