10 Q's with Janelle Saccucci of Blenz Coffee

Name: Janelle Saccucci
Work Title: Director of Marketing and Communications at Blenz Coffee
Hometown City: St. Albert, Alberta

Work Life:
Oversee and manage all aspects of marketing for Blenz Coffee. And by all aspects, I mean all aspects. Media relations, PR, internal communications, digital strategy, product and drink creation. An easier question would be, “What don’t you do at Blenz?”

Q. What’s more likely to be in your cup? Chai or Coffee and why?
A. Coffee! It helps that Blenz has a professional espresso maker about 10 steps from my desk, coffee tastes like liquid heaven, and I literally get paid to love coffee.

Q. If you were on a jet plane right now, where would you be headed?
A. Rome! Italy or anywhere in the Mediterranean. My parents are both Italian, yet I’ve never travelled to Italy. I need to change that ASAP. Europe trip is definitely happening this year.

Q. Tell us one thing that not everyone may know about you?
A. I’ve always loved the jobs I’ve had - My first job was at American Eagle when I was 15, I worked at Sephora as a makeup artist, Earls as a waitress, at an outdoor pool as a lifeguard (tanning by the pool was the best summer job), as a learning coach for children with disabilities ... every job I’ve ever had hasn’t felt like a job. To me, that’s the key to career success.

Q. If you won the lottery at this very moment, what would your next move be?
A. Now I’m day-dreaming about all the things I would do with millions of dollars…
It’s a tie between:

1) Travelling the world (Japan, Australia, Brazil) without a timeline when to come back.

2) Hiring a team of the top creative professionals, and start the coolest marketing organization. I guess I can still do that if I don’t win the lottery, but we’d have a beautiful penthouse office overlooking the ocean with a cooler of Okanagan wine refills automatically if I won the lottery.

Q. Tell us your three favourite things about working for Blenz?
1) Creative freedom. Some of the projects I work on I used to dream about working on. Creating new seasonal drinks (coconut chai lattes, candy cane hot chocolates) and creating unique marketing campaigns doesn’t feel like work it’s so much fun.

2) Access to free Blenz drinks all day. We have a test kitchen in the head office with all Blenz drinks… I have a love/hate relationship with free drinks 24/7.

3) Collaborating with people and other brands I hugely respect. (Mostly) everyone loves coffee and coffee shop beverages, so there’s a lot of room to work with influencers, collaborate with local brands, and give back to the community through some amazing sponsorships and charities.

Q. What kind of tips and/or advice can you offer to someone who may pursue a Director of Marketing and Communications position (like yourself)?
A. I started off at Blenz as the social media intern with a three-month contract after my university degree. Most of my classmates were searching for jobs with a fancier title (and pay) - but I knew Blenz had the potential for growth as well a reputable name. I gave the job my all, and I got promoted for my effort. I’d tell someone - don’t be afraid to start small in an organization with a reputable name. Working for an organization that people recognize and respect can have more weight than working for a small startup that no one has heard of.

Q. If you could offer one piece of advice high school Janelle about grown up Janelle, what would you say?
A. Time goes quickly. Use this time to develop your skill set and practice pitching clients and working on marketing projects. When you’re young you think you’ll be young forever, but I wish I gained more experience early on.

Q. We’re obsessed with your personal social media account. It is serious goals. What excites you the most about social media?
A. Social media is everything I love about marketing: photography, content creation, collaboration, wit and writing skills. It’s the way I use all my marketing knowledge for personal branding. And more than that, I’ve met some amazing people (like you!) through Instagram. Nothing can beat in person connection and friendships.

Q. What is your all time favourite quote?
A. “Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can’t, you’re right.” - Henry Ford. Sometimes the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves are just that, stories.
