Name: Maxine Yu
Work Title: Founder and Owner of House of Max Jewelry, BC Showroom Coordinator for Alphabroder Canada
Hometown City: Born in Canada, raised in The Philippines, Currently living in Vancouver

Work Life: I manage and run a showroom for the BC territory of Alphabroder Canada. We are one of the top suppliers and distributors of apparel in the promotional products industry in North America. As an owner of a startup, my main squeeze is definitely working for my brand House of Max Jewelry. This is something I work on constantly before and after my job. Which means lots of sleepless nights and coffee to keep me going!

Q. What’s more likely to be in your cup? Chai or Coffee and why?
A. Coffee!!! I’m a dark roast coffee kinda gal. I wake up at 6am so it’s become a necessity in my morning routine.

Q. If you were on a jet plane right now, where would you be headed?
A. Barcelona and Rome! I’ve never been before but I’ve always had those two cities on the top of my travel list.

Q. If a genie could grant you three wishes, what would they be?
1. An unlimited amount to spend at Sephora
2. Travel the world
3. World Peace (actually though)

Q. Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
A. I hate wearing pants, men with ponytails terrify me and I am not very good at making small talk.

Q. What inspired you to launch House of Max?
A. I have a background in fashion and jewelry design and sort of went into freelance styling in the beginning of my career. I ended up pursuing Visual Merchandising for many years which led to my love of accessorizing and also developing a jewelry obsession. My constant mission to find unique jewelry at an affordable price eventually resulted to conceptualizing House of Max. I wanted to share and create a place where women all over the world can shop for timeless pieces they can wear confidently at an affordable price without sacrificing the quality.

Q. What has been the most significant lesson you’ve learned since launching House of Max?
A. Diving into such a competitive industry on my own was absolutely intimidating. I’ve always been the type to figure everything out on my own but I also learned that it is okay to ask for help. Surrounding myself with people who inspire me, asking questions and offering my support has definitely had a positive impact on both my personal and business life. I’ve also made mistakes and failed but being open to learning has helped me come a long way.

Q. If you could tell something to high school Max about grown up Max now, what would you say?
A. Don’t get involved in any drama. It is the biggest waste of time. Take this time to focus on yourself and learn new things.
Start eating healthy now and your body will thank you later! Especially when your metabolism slows down after you turn 25.

Q. Where do you see House of Max in the next five years?
A. I hope to bring in more unique, handcrafted pieces by yours truly and by discovering local artisans around the world to offer the best selection of jewelry to a global audience.

Q. What is your all time favourite inspirational quote?
A. “Just do it.” I guess this is more of a tagline but it’s bold and straight forward.

Q. If you had to eat one meal consistently for the next week what would it be?
A. A kale salad sprinkled with sunflower seeds. Haha JK ! I would have Poutine. Can’t go wrong with fries, cheese and gravy! I should actually start eating more greens, though.
